I didn't use to believe about culture shock is until I moved to our neighboring country, South Africa. To some, it is like going overseas, do not laugh cause it’s actually true. Let me start by saying as women in Zimbabwe they are certain things or a way of living that is expected of us. The only place you can express yourself is in your head, saloon, art class, cooking classes, and the list is endless but once you get out of that place people will judge you for being different. I remember seeing a quote that said "Women are taught so many things, that's why they decide to be strange and powerful".
Anyways getting back to my story, so my uncle decided for me to come to SA and help him with a few projects, hence I agreed to take the earliest flight as soon as possible. Just two weeks before my flight my sister decided I should do a hair do-over. We went through the phone looking for amazing ladies’ hair cuts and the color I wanted, we settled on blond. The next day we went to see a barber and gosh did he do a beautiful job. Throughout the whole way, was joy and excitement and a little bit weird. So guess what now, two days after as I went to buy few things, I realized the whole street was looking at me. It did not even get into my thoughts that I now have white hair I mean blond hair. Just after a few steps, I realized I was different now, you could imagine.
Finally, tomorrow was the big day, even the pandemic was not even in my mind. Please don't get me wrong Covid-19 is real and it’s killing people out there, so be safe. Anyways, where was I, Oh yes!! The big day then came, yes it was me on a plane, and yes there is a first time for everything.
Eventually, I arrived at OR Tambo Airport, and gosh my eyes could not believe it. At first, I had to pinch myself to see if it was true. Now that's not the story, my English became useless...
